POLYESTER AND STYROFOAM

Zoe Nienaber

The thoughts in my head
Feel like they’re on ice
Cold and numb to their core–

My eyes, all they see, when they look outside
Is a black and grey monochrome–

And I can’t help, but to just look around…
And in doing that, I have found
That each person looks, just like I fee
Deadpanned and heavy,
In this world made from polyester and styrofoam–

I’m just not sure
How I can change anything
When the world we live in
Feels like a growing wasteland–

Wrappers litter the street
Bodies sit at our feet
Whether close by or 5,000 miles away–

 We are killing our mother,
And killings of each other
Is the result we get in turn…
Because there’s limited time, water, land,
And I find, I’m stuck fantasizing
Of a better world.
