EDITOR’S NOTE

It’s my pleasure to introduce the first issue of BLOCK. This November, you’ll discover ten brief, beautiful works of poetry and prose written by Writer’s Block students in spring 2026. Some of these writers have graduated, some are still with us, all courageously shared their hearts and minds with us on the page. By reading the issue, by spreading the word, sharing the link, posting screenshots on Instagram, you’re supporting young MSJ writers aflame with talent.

Going online is new for Writer’s Block. As we transition from printed chapbooks to monthly digital issues, and as things turn colder on campus, I’m reminded of a line by F. Scott Fitzgerald: “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” I’m feeling a sense of nostalgia thinking of out past Writer’s Block students who helped build our community, whose stories and poems filled our chapbooks’ pages, and I’m feeling a sense of freshness and renewal—in the air, in our classrooms—with all the new students joining Writer’s Block this year. Just as seasons change, we remember the old by welcoming in the new.

I hope y’all like the look of our new digital space, as we deliver issues straight to your inboxes. With awe and admiration for our students’ creativity, I invite you to read the latest words from Writer’s Block. Enjoy!
